Become a Medical Patient in Massachusetts – It’s Easy!

Getting your medical cannabis card in Massachusetts is quick and straightforward. With just a few easy steps, you can be certified and start shopping as a patient—often the same day. Sanctuary is here to help guide you through every step.

Quick Access

Why Sign Up as a Patient?

Save on Taxes: Medical patients don’t pay state excise, sales, or local taxes that adult-use customers do—meaning meaningful savings every visit.

Higher Purchase Limits: Patients can purchase up to a 60-day supply (up to 10 oz), or more if approved by your healthcare provider.

Instant Access: After certification, you’ll receive Initial Access to purchase up to a 14-day supply (typically ~2.5 oz) while your physical card is processed.

Who Qualifies?

If you’re 18 or older (or under 18 with additional documentation) and have a qualifying medical condition, you can be certified by a Massachusetts-registered healthcare provider. If your current doctor isn’t registered, Sanctuary can connect you with one.

Prefer an on-site experience? Alternative Wellness partners with Sanctuary for occasional in-store certifying events at $99. It’s a convenient way to get certified and ask questions face-to-face. Keep an eye on our channels for upcoming event dates.

How It Works

1) Get Certified

Meet with a Massachusetts-registered provider (physician, NP, or PA) via telehealth or at an in-store event. After your appointment, your provider submits your certification and you receive a unique PIN.

2) Gather Your Documents

You’ll need:

  • Your PIN (from your certifying provider)
  • A valid photo ID (e.g., MA driver’s license or passport)
  • Proof of Massachusetts residency
  • A passport-style photo if you don’t have one on file with the RMV

Note: There’s no state registration fee, but providers may charge for the certification visit (see options above).

3) Register Online

Go to the state’s Medical Use of Marijuana Program portal, enter your PIN, and upload your ID and proof of residency. Paper registration is available if you can’t apply online. [Visit the State Registration Portal] (insert your portal button/link here)

4) Start Shopping

Once approved, you’ll receive a temporary patient card so you can shop at Sanctuary right away. Your official Medical Use of Marijuana Program ID card arrives by mail shortly after.
