Cannabis-Infused Butter

Overview

Cannabis-infused butter is a foundational preparation used in a wide range of recipes. It allows cannabinoids to be incorporated into food through a fat-based medium.

Ingredients

  • 6 grams cannabis flower
  • 1 pound unsalted butter

Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Thermometer
  • Fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth
  • Heat-safe container

Instructions

Step 1: Decarboxylate the Cannabis

This process activates cannabinoids prior to infusion.

  1. Preheat oven to 225°F.
  2. Spread cannabis evenly on a baking sheet.
  3. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, avoiding temperatures above 225°F.
  4. Allow to cool, then grind to a coarse consistency.

Step 2: Infuse the Butter

  1. Melt butter in a saucepan over medium-low heat.
  2. Add decarboxylated cannabis.
  3. Maintain temperature below 200°F and cook for approximately 45 minutes.

Step 3: Strain and Cool

  1. Remove from heat and allow to rest for 10 minutes.
  2. Strain through mesh or cheesecloth into a container.
  3. Press gently to extract remaining liquid.

Estimated Potency

Potency will vary depending on the cannabinoid content of the starting material and final yield. Calculate total cannabinoid content and divide by the number of servings for an approximate per-serving value.

Dosing Considerations

Potency is an estimate and may vary based on preparation variables. Start with a small amount and adjust gradually after assessing effects.

Storage

  • Refrigerate in a sealed container.
  • Use within approximately 4 to 6 weeks.
  • Freeze for longer storage if needed.

Additional Notes

  • Maintain low temperatures during infusion to preserve cannabinoids.
  • This butter can be substituted into most recipes that call for butter.
  • Label clearly to avoid unintentional use.
