Cannabis-Infused Oil

Overview

Cannabis-infused oil is a foundational preparation used to incorporate cannabinoids into a wide range of recipes. It can be made with various cooking oils depending on intended use and flavor preference.

Ingredients

  • 6 grams cannabis flower
  • 2 cups oil (olive, coconut, canola, or vegetable oil)

Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Thermometer
  • Fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Heat-safe container

Instructions

Step 1: Decarboxylate the Cannabis

Decarboxylation activates cannabinoids prior to infusion.

  1. Preheat oven to 225°F.
  2. Spread cannabis evenly on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  3. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, ensuring the temperature does not exceed 225°F.
  4. Allow to cool, then grind to a coarse consistency.

Step 2: Infuse the Oil

Controlled heat supports effective cannabinoid transfer.

  1. Heat oil in a saucepan over medium-low heat.
  2. Add decarboxylated cannabis.
  3. Maintain temperature below 200°F and cook for approximately 45 minutes.

Step 3: Rest and Strain

  1. Remove from heat and allow the mixture to sit undisturbed for 10 minutes.
  2. Strain through a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a heat-safe container.
  3. Press gently to extract remaining oil.

Estimated Potency

Potency will vary depending on the cannabinoid content of the starting material and final yield. Calculate total cannabinoid content and divide by total volume to estimate per-serving potency.

Dosing Considerations

Potency is an estimate and may vary based on factors including starting material, preparation method, and individual response. Start with a small amount and allow sufficient time to assess effects before increasing the serving size.

Storage

  • Store in a sealed container in a cool, dark place.
  • Refrigeration may extend shelf life depending on oil type.
  • Label clearly with date and contents.

Additional Notes

  • Oil selection can influence flavor and intended use, such as olive oil for savory recipes or coconut oil for baking.
  • Maintain low temperatures during infusion to help preserve cannabinoids.
  • Can be substituted into recipes that call for oil.

Safety Notes

  • Keep out of reach of children and pets.
  • Store separately from non-infused oils.
  • Clearly label to avoid unintended use.
